ROCHESTER - Alan B. Bemis of Rochester, NH formerly of Pittsfield, Maine, died on October 16, 2013 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a four year battle with leukemia. Born January 6, 1949 in Bangor, ME to Manley and Pauline Bemis, he graduated from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine. Police work was always his principal interest. He studied criminal justice at St. Petersburg Jr. College in Florida and graduated from Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro, Maine. After a stint in the US Army, Al became a police officer in Skowhegan, Maine. He also served as an officer in Lubec, ME and later in Pittsfield, ME. There, he was also very involved as a Captain of the volunteer fire department for many years. He also worked as an auto salesman in New Hampshire. In his first run for statewide office, Al won a seat in the NH State Legislature and served a two year term. He also served six years as a Rochester Police Commissioner. His term would have ended in December 2013. Al leaves a sister, Betty Allison of Wellfleet Cape Cod, MA; and a brother Carlton Bemis of Augusta, ME. Visitation will be Friday Oct. 25, 2013 at the R. M. Edgerly & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester NH from 12-2. The funeral service will be held at 2PM in the chapel of the funeral home following the hours. Burial will be in Village Cemetery, Pittsfield, ME at a later date.
