ROCHESTER - Frank D. Callaghan ("Junior"), 85, of Rochester, N.H., died peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2009, at the Hyder Hospice House in Dover, N.H., after a battle with cancer. Frank was the son of Frank D. and Esther (Rogers) Callaghan of Rochester. He is survived by his loving of wife of 46 years, Dot (McGettigan); two sisters, Madelyn Elliott and Barbara Provenzano, both of Bristol, Conn.; his sisters-in-law, Alberta Callaghan of Rochester, and Joan Callaghan of Tucson, Ariz.; and his brother-in-law, Frank Provenzano of Bristol, Conn.He is also survived by his seven children, Peter Callaghan of Concord, N.H., Paul Callaghan, Sheila Colson and Andrew Callaghan, all of Rochester, Kathryn Thoms of Northwood, N.H., Christopher Callaghan of Baltimore, Md., and Brian Callaghan of Northboro, Mass., and 15 favorite grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, John, Rusty, George and Gerald Callaghan, and his sisters, Louise Callaghan and Mary Harding.Frank was a current Rochester School Board member, and was a former representative in the New Hampshire Legislature, chair of the Strafford County delegation, and Rochester city councilor. He was a longtime owner of Signal Auto Supply and was later employed in various capacities by the City of Rochester, including as athletic director. Frank was a lifelong sports fan, and was most passionate about Spaulding High School teams and Notre Dame football. He particularly enjoyed watching his grandchildren. Frank was a devoted volunteer, serving as a Little League coach and umpire, and he was the timer for Spaulding basketball and football games and state high school basketball tournament games for 65 years.He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Church in Rochester, where he served as an usher and sacristan. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Rochester Elks, where he was an Exalted Ruler.Frank was inducted into the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association Hall of Fame and the Rochester Sports Hall of Fame. In 2008, Frank was named Rochester Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. He was awarded the Carl H. Lundholm award in 2007 for his service to youth and athletics in New Hampshire.Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary's Church, Lowell St., Rochester.
