Shirley M. Leslie, 87, of Rochester, N.H., passed away on May 3, 2011, after a brief period of failing health, at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover where she was lovingly cared for. Shirley was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Rochester, N.H., the daughter of the late Rolfe E. and Mildred A. (Sanborn) Richardson. She was a 1941 graduate of Spaulding High School and a 1945 graduate of Friends University in Wichita, KS. Shirley was the leader of the ODAKO 4-H Club in Dover, N.H., where she opened her home to children on Tolend Road for many years. More recently Shirley became "Facebook friends" with her 4-H "kids" and others who loved her dearly. Shirley was an avid gardener who loved her flowers. She also enjoyed camping in the White Mountains, genealogy, crafts, and playing games with friends and family. Throughout her life she was an active member of the Society of Friends, both in the Dover and Gonic Meetings. Her faith and family were important aspects of her life. Shirley was also active with the Rochester Historical Society and the Greater Rochester Interfaith Council. She approached her involvement as a labor of love and brought laughter and humor to everyone around her. Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Edward S. Leslie, and her brother, Harvey Richardson. She leaves her sister, Barbara Whitman and husband, Brumley, of Prineville, Oregon; her son, Dick Leslie and wife, Wendy, of Madison, and daughters, Betty Chabott and husband Ted, of Keene, and Judy Furlong and husband, Mark, of Kingston; and seven grandchildren, Derek Leslie and wife, Amy, of Fremont, Craig Leslie of Lincoln, Leslie Muska and husband, Simon, of Enfield, Conn., Katie Moriarty and husband, Jason, of Tariffville, Conn., Jeff Richard and wife, Tara, of Epping, Lindsay Furlong of Durham, and Thomas Furlong of Kingston. She also leaves six great-grandchildren, Taigan, Makenna, Braden, Julia, Payten and Ryan, and beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, 10:00 AM, at the R. M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home at 86 South Main Street, Rochester, N.H.
