David Noel Hayes, age seventy, passed into the next life March 26 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital, Rochester NH of progressive liver and kidney failure. David Hayes, elder son of Willis "Red" Hayes and Fredina Thelma (Atkinson) Hayes, was popular in school and friends with everyone. An outstanding athlete, he was a member of the 1957 Spaulding High School Championship Football Team, 1959 All State End and a starter on the 1960 Shrine Maple Sugar Football Team. He also competed in Track and Field. One of his proudest accomplishments was as an US Olympic Torch Run Bearer, on June 14, 1996, in Wilton NH. After high school, David served four years in the U.S. Navy. In civilian life, he chose a career in law enforcement and retired as a security officer from the Portsmouth Naval Base in 2002. David's hobbies were family genealogy, writing short stories, bird watching, fishing and gardening and making his homemade piccalilli, which once earned him a blue ribbon at the Rochester Fair. David Hayes was a member of American Legion Post No. 7 and Humane Lodge No. 21 F. & A.M. and was also a loyal supporter of the American Red Cross and the Marine's Toys for Tots. David is survived by his brothers Robert E. Hayes of Bangor Maine, Richard A. Hayes of New York, sisters Linda L. Baldwin of Dover and Patricia E. Hale of Madbury, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family extends their gratitude to Cousin Vickie Lambert, Aunt Marilyn Berry, Keith Hayward, David Miller and the staff at Colonial Hills Nursing Home for their loving care and support during David's debilitating illness. Visiting hours will be 11:00am to 1:00pm, Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the R. M Edgerly Funeral Home at 86 So. Main Street, Rochester NH followed by his funeral service at 1:00 PM.
