GONIC - Ret. Major Harry R. Bowen, 77, passed away Dec. 31, 2009, at the Hyder Hospice House in Dover. Harry was born on June 8, 1932, in North Weymouth, Mass., to Harold and Alice Bowen. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Army and, following his enlistment, married Virginia Volkmann on Feb. 9, 1952. The couple had six children - five sons and a daughter Victoria, who passed away at the age of 2 in 1964. As a decorated soldier, Harry served two tours in Vietnam and was a two-time recipient of the Bronze Star medal. In addition to serving his country, Harry also had an interest in farming, lobstering, septic system designs, and auto mechanics. Harry will be lovingly remembered by family and friends for his humor, open-heartedness, and passion for gardening. He is survived by wife, Virginia; children, Michael (Reneal), Mark (Michele), Robert (Sally), Randal (Shona), Kris; sister Jean Kane; niece, Deborah Newcomb-Sullivan; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.A viewing will be held Jan. 8...
