Alida Bermingham

April 2, 1934 — November 19, 2025

Dover, NH

Alida Louise (Nault) Bermingham passed away peacefully at 91 years old on November 19, 2025, surrounded by family.

Although she was fond of many activities, Alida’s greatest joy by far was being a mother. She is survived by her four children: James Bermingham of Portsmouth, NH; Kathleen Bermingham and wife Carol Strecker of Fayette, ME; Alida Levier Bermingham of Farmington, NH; and Shannon Chassé and husband Andre of Alton, NH; seven grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her grandson, James LaPrade, of whom she was endlessly proud for his service in the US Marine Corps and for his love and devotion to his family.

Born April 2, 1934, in Central Falls, RI, Alida was the second child and only daughter of Marc A. Nault Sr. and Yvonne (Desilets). She was a beloved aunt to the children of her three brothers, Marc Jr., Robert, and Donald.

Alida graduated from North Attleboro High School in 1952. There, she was a member of numerous extracurricular clubs and the basketball, volleyball, and softball teams. When not in school, she was outdoors ice skating, swimming, or trying to beat her brothers in a footrace. Throughout her life, she treasured keeping in touch with her classmates and supporting her hometown football team. Eager to pass on her love for learning, she often told stories about her favorite teachers and how much she loved being a student.

Alida was ballroom dancing when she met the love of her life, James “Jim” Bermingham. They were married for 50 years, from 1956 until his death in 2006. During the years her husband served overseas in the US Navy, Alida single-handedly cared for their children and the home where they settled in Dover, NH. She would not hesitate to make a warm bed for any friend, neighbor, dog, or cat that appeared at her door. Both playful and strong-willed, Jim and Alida’s marriage was a constant source of unwavering support to their expansive circle of friends and family.

A gifted and dexterous maker, Alida was forever in the midst of a knitting project or sewing pattern, preparing a family meal or watching a classic movie. She was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins. A voracious reader and amateur historian, she loved retelling stories, gifting books about World War II, and sharing interesting facts she came across. Through these, she passed on her most deeply held values of education, justice, and service.

Alida is back now in her husband’s arms, waltzing across a dance floor. For those still here, there will be a celebration of her life on December 4, 2025, at 10:30am at R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home in Rochester, NH.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation, in honor of Alida’s affection for all creatures, to the Stratham, New Hampshire SPCA.
