S. Lebanon, ME - Melvin W. Atkinson, 83, passed away Friday April 29, 2011 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center following a period of failing health. Born September 7, 1927 in East Boston, MA he was the son of the late Frederick and Ruby (Smith) Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson served as a medic in the US Army. He worked for many years as a foreman for Spaulding Fiber and later retired as a Lab Tech from Lydall. He enjoyed farming and was an avid pool player. He was a self taught guitarist and clarinet player. He enjoyed long drives with his faithful K-9 companion Ruby. In his earlier years, he enjoyed woodworking including making long bows and kayaks for his children. Members of his family include his children Michael L. Atkinson of S. Lebanon, ME; Charlene M. Bernier of Parsonsfield, ME; Edward M. Atkinson of East Wakefield, NH; and Timothy G. Atkinson of Sanbornville, NH; his grandchildren Michelle, Michael, Melvin, Shawn, Miranda, Courtney, Krystal, Tristan, Sean, Alicia, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Including, a special niece Victoria Lambert of Rochester whose love and laughter made her uncle Mel very happy, and two daughter in-laws, Kellie and Mary, who he loved to tease. Warm thanks to his neighbors Ida and Bob Druge whose kindness and watchful eyes will never be forgotten. He was predeceased by his wife Charlotte (Dagenais) Atkinson in 1995, two sons Melvin V. Atkinson in 1999 and Carl E. Atkinson in 2005, and his siblings Edward and Glendon Atkinson and Fredina and Elaine Hayes. Family and friends may visit Wednesday May 4, 2011 from 11AM - 1PM at the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St. Rochester, NH. A funeral service will be held at 1PM in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow in the New Cold Spring Cemetery in East Rochester.
