Milton P. Appleby

July 3, 1923 — April 1, 2018

Milton P. Appleby, a longtime resident of Rochester, NH, passed away on April 1, 2018.  Milton was born in Needham, Mass on July 3, 1923.  He lived there for 18 years and then moved to Barrington, NH where he resided for 12 years and worked on a poultry farm.  Milton moved to Rochester in 1952 where he lived on his farm until he was 92 when he needed more care and moved next door with his friend, Mary Ellen.  He was in the dairy business for 20 years, and the poultry business for Leon Calef for 11 years.  He also worked in the woods with his beloved oxen. Milton is best known for his fiddle playing.  He played for square dances within 100 miles of Rochester for many years, with many different callers, including Phil Johnson, Mal Hayden, Al Ruggero, and Guy Mann, and also produced two records.  He was often accompanied by his sister Edith. Milton's mother was Laura Alice Prince, and his father was John Bickford Appleby.  Milton has one sister, Edith M. Patch of Milton, NH.  He is survived by his long-time friend, Mary Ellen Humphrey, his sister Edith and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Burial will be in the Anglican Church of the Ascension Cemetery, Lower Norton, New Brunswick, Canada.  A special memorial service is planned in July at his residence on Chestnut Hill Road.
