ROCHESTER - Nelta (Goodwin) Grant, 89, died after a period of declining health on Friday, August 20, 2010, at the Gafney Home in Rochester, where she had resided for the past two years. She formerly resided on Vernon Avenue in Rochester. Born December 23, 1920, in Rochester, she was the daughter of the late Neal and Vivian (Walker) Goodwin. She was employed for many years as a clerk at J. J. Newberry's in Rochester until its closure and later at Colby Footwear in Gonic as a Payroll Clerk until her retirement. Nelta was a member of the First United Methodist church of Rochester, a 70-year member and Past Noble Grand of Naomi Rebekah Lodge, No. 4, a 75-year member of Rochester Grange No. 86, and a member of Eastern NH Pomona Grange and the NH State Grange. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Austin Grant, in 2006, and by her three sisters, Frances Dean, Eileen Caron, and Beverly Kearns. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Carl Clarke II. Nelta loved her family dearly and is survived by her daughter, Karen Clarke, of Rochester, son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Vickie Grant, of Farmington, three grandsons and their wives, Doug and Michele Grant, of Rochester, Jeff and Karyn Grant, of Farmington, and Jim and Mindy Grant, of Strafford, and eight great-grandchildren, Taryn and Brayden Grant, Austin and Avery Grant, and DJ Smith, Nikki, Lydia, and Jillian Grant. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Priscilla Goodale, and her husband Bob, of Wells, Maine. The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the Staff at the Gafney Home for the wonderful care given and compassion shown to Nelta. She truly loved and thought so much of all of you. Memorial donations may be made in Nelta's name to the Gafney Home, 90 Wakefield Street, Rochester, NH 03867. Calling hours will be held Monday evening, August 23, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the R. M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester, NH. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 34 South Main Street, Rochester, NH, with Rev. James Cann presiding. Burial will follow at the Rochester Cemetery on Franklin Street.
