ROCHESTER NH : Richard L. Groat (TSGT USAF Retired), 69, died on May 3rd, at Kindred Hospital with his family by his side after a lengthy illness. He was born on August 6th, 1944 in Cottage Grove, OR, the son of Elmer J Groat and Juliet (Cochran) Groat. Richard, a Vietnam Veteran, began his military career in 1961. First joining the U.S. Army, before transferring to the U.S. Air Force. During the course of his military career, he became a Mid Air Refueler (Boom Operator), helped develop a refueling simulator for the Boeing KC135 Stratotanker, became an instructor while stationed at Castle AFB, CA, a role in which he continued with the 509th Bombardment Wing located at Pease AFB, NH. In 1982 the Wing was awarded the Sanders Trophy for Best Air Refueling Unit. He retired from the service after 23 years 1985. Upon retiring he was employed with the State of New Hampshire Bureau of Turnpikes, where he remained for another 10 years until retirement.
