Obituary

Strafford – Richard A. Young, 96, passed away February 24, 2025, at Wentworth Douglass Hospital following a brief illness.

Richard was born on July 19, 1928, in Peabody, MA, he was the son of the late Charles and Sarah (Dyke) Young.

In 1951, Richard married his best friend, Eileen M. Broehl, that he met while they were attending Oregon State (College) University.

Richard served in the U.S. Army Engineer TOPO Company during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. Prior to being drafted into the service; Richard was proud to have worked on the Alcan Highway. Richard had a very productive career working in the finance department as a Group Controller for the Latin American division of Gillette.

Richard was a devoted husband and father. He spent summer vacations at the Young Family camp on Lake Winnipesaukee until putting in a pool where many family gatherings were hosted. He enjoyed meticulously tending to his lawn and gardens both in Peabody, MA & Strafford, NH. Upon retirement, he began hiking with his brother and daughters. He completed all (48) NH 4,000 footers, twice! A talented woodworker; Richard created many beautiful pieces of furniture for the family and customized his home. Richard loved traveling with his beloved wife, Eileen. They traveled to all 50 states! They also traveled extensively throughout the world taking more than 20 cruises in 10+ years.

Members of his family include his loving wife of 73 years Eileen (Broehl) Young of Strafford, NH; his children Sheri M. McSheehy and husband Jack of Strafford, NH; Sandra E. Young of Bradford, MA; and Carol E. Young of Rollinsford, NH; his grandchildren Michael Clarke, and his wife, Hillary; Devan Clarke and his wife, Stephanie; Savanah Clarke; Daniel Farmer and his fiancé Meaghan; Ellen Farmer and her fiancé, Nicholas Desrocher; and three great grandchildren Caleb, James and Logan; his sister Priscilla Felt of Keene, NH; and many nieces, grandnieces, great grandnieces and nephews, grandnephews and great grandnephews.

A private burial will be held graveside at Oak Grove Cemetery, Peabody, MA at a later date.

The family asks to honor Richard's memory by planting a tree, taking a hike/walk, or in Richard's name, donate to the charity/organization of your choice.
