Roger Beaudoin

d. February 9, 2017

Roger W. Beaudoin, age 82, died February 9th, 2017 at Riverside Rest Home in Dover, NH.  Born July 21, 1934 in Rochester, he was the son of George V. Beaudoin, Sr. and Violet (Grassie) Beaudoin.  He was a life-long resident of Rochester and was an educator, law enforcement officer, and a Police Commissioner for 12 years for the City of Rochester. He was a graduate of Spaulding High School, class of 1952; Plymouth State College, B.Ed. in 1956; and earned a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire in 1962.  In addition to the formal degrees he achieved, he received specialized forensic education and training from Boston University, Harvard School of Legal Medicine, and the Institute of Applied Science in Criminalistics, Chicago, IL.  His educational work involved several years teaching at the secondary level, both at Kennett High School in Conway, NH and Spaulding High School in Rochester, NH.  He also served as an instructor for many years in Criminalistics at Saint Anselm College, at the Police Standards and Training Council in Concord, NH for full-time police recruits, and in many part-time police academies.  During his tenure at the University of New Hampshire, he provided organization and support to the part-time certification schools held on the Durham campus.  His law enforcement work was focused in Criminalistics for the State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Division of State Police, for a period of 20 years.  He was the Commanding Officer of the Forensic Laboratory with the rank of Captain and was instrumental in developing a modern Forensic Laboratory service for all Law Enforcement agencies within the State of New Hampshire.  Upon his retirement in 1982 he became employed by the University of New Hampshire Police Department serving in the capacity of Operations Commander with the rank of Captain, Associate Director with the rank of Major, and Chief of the Department between 1988 and May of 2000, when he retired.  During his 38 years of law enforcement work he was an active member of a number of professional associations such as the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directions, Harvard Associates in Legal Medicine, Executive Board NH Medico-Legal Society, NH Criminal Investigators Association, NH Chiefs of Police Association, Fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, International Chiefs of Police Association, New England Police Chiefs Association, International Association of College/University Police, as well as many local and county organizations.  He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jane (Landry) Beaudoin; his son Heath Beaudoin and his wife, Darcy, of Rochester; his daughter Quinn Hope and her husband, Aaron, of Rochester; his two grandchildren, Norah and Jake Beaudoin, of Rochester; his brother, Donald Beaudoin, of Ocala, FL; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brother, George Beaudoin, Jr., and George's wife, Eileen (Thompson) Beaudoin, as well as his brother Donald's wife, Cecil (Bedard) Beaudoin.  Roger loved to teach, but even more than that, he loved the verbal interaction with people of all walks of life and all types of personalities.  Whenever a person or student came to him seeking help or guidance, he would advise and council them because he sincerely wanted them to succeed.  He was a mentor to many, and along the way he learned a lot himself. Even though he was, at times, a firm and stern educator, he was always fair and forgiving.  Many of his high school students were grateful later in life for his influence in helping them achieve their goals.  Roger loved his family and watching his grandchildren play and run around.  He loved the two dogs and many cats he and Jane had over the years.  His sometimes commanding personality was balanced by his kindness, generosity, and humor.  He will be greatly missed and remembered by his family and longtime friends.  At his request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  There will be a private graveside service for immediate family in the spring.  Arrangements are under the care of R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester, NH.  To sign the online guestbook, please go to www.edgerlyfh.com In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial donations in Roger's name may be made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, an organization that was very near and dear to his heart.  http://www.cvhsonline.org/
