Sumner Lewis Chick

Sumner Lewis Chick, 86 years old of Rochester, NH, passed away on

December 20, 2025 at Wentworth Douglas Hospital after a period of failing

health. He was born on April 5, 1939 in Sanford, Maine to the late George and

Edith (Corliss) Chick.

Sumner grew up in the local area. Attending schools in Maine, and graduating

from Sanford High School class of 1957. He joined the Navy in 1957 where he

served on the USS Forrestal, America’s first completed supercarrier. Sumner

married his first wife Mary (Rock) Chick in 1960 and they made their home in

Rochester and raised their 4 sons.

After the military, Sumner pursued a career in Machine Tool Processes and

was a successful Tool and Die maker where he worked at Sherman Tool,

Spaulding Fiber, Eagle Industries, and Thompson Center Arms. In 1995 he

retired from Thompson Center Arms as the Toolroom Supervisor. Upon his

retirement, he and his second wife Lillian travelled, lived briefly in Florida and

then made their home in Rochester at Tara Estates. His hobbies included

woodworking, fishing, and travelling.

Sumner is survived by his sons Michael and his wife Judy of Rochester, David

and his wife Denise of Rochester, Kenneth and his wife Linda of Strafford and

Bruce and his wife Lynne also of Strafford as well as stepsons Richard Fortuna

of Fla., Stanley Fortuna of Maine, and Gary Fortuna of Rochester, 4

grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, his sisters Sandra Booth of Fla., Sally

Schloesser of Rochester and sister in-law Debra Chick of Fla.

He also leaves behind numerous neighbors who became like family in his Tara

Mobile Home community, especially his neighbors and good friends, Moe and

Mary Ann Lanteigne.

He was predeceased by his second wife of 25 years Lillian Chick in 2019,

brother Stephen Chick, brother in-laws Robert Booth, Vern Schloesser and his

beloved dog Cassie.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Rochester Cemetery with a

celebration of life to follow.
