Rochester NH-Sylvia W. Brown,84, formerly of Dodge St died Tuesday August 25, 2020 at her neighbors' home where she has been deeply cared for by her dear friend, Jim Ambrose with the help of Wentworth Hospice of Somersworth. Born November 26, 1935 in Amherst Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Winfred (King) Brown Sylvia grew up in Nova Scotia Canada where attended Halifax Business College. Sylvia moved to the United States and married Frederico Ponte. Prior to moving to Rochester, they lived for several years in Hawaii and Texas. They traveled extensively worldwide, such as Australia and Japan while Frederico was in the Airforce. Sylvia was an educated women having attended NHTI and earned several other certifications.When she moved to the United States, she lived a very active and social life, being very proud of being a 40 year member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and active in helping Veterans being a member of Soldier Helpers and Pease Greeters. Sylvia worked many jobs over her life such as Nursing assistant for several different nursing homes, pediatric dental assistant for the Red Cross at Webb Air Force Base in Texas. During the 80's she worked primarily for the City of Rochester in the Zoning Department, servings in the capacity of secretary of the zoning board, administrative assistant in building, planning, health and welfare, animal control and public buildings department. She was a very social person having served her community in so many ways from hosting elderly people at UNH, she volunteered as the coordinator of volunteers for the USO, served as assistant teacher at the Head Start progr4am in Rochester, Frisbie Memorial Gift Shop and member of the FMH Auxiliary, Farmington NH Chapter of Strafford County Extension as Treasurer, Arts Rochester, Daughters of the Nyle (wives of wives of Free Masons) and British Wives Club and Officers Wives Club. Sylvia was a sweet kind person, she was a very happy person, cared for her community and others around her. During her last few months, she was taken in by a very dear friend, Jim Ambrose of Rochester. He would like to thank Wentworth Hospice for the superb care they took of Sylvia. Also a big thank you to Easter Seal Homemakers for the adult day care program and the care they provided during her days while living at Jim's home. Members of her family include a sister Judy, several nieces and nephews, a cousin Carmen Merrill of Amherst N.S. and his 3 children.
