Walter King, 90 years old of Wolfeboro, NH; formerly of Rochester NH, passed away on May 4, 2026, after a brief period of declining health.
Walter was born November 13, 1935, in Rochester, NH to the late Reginald and Isabelle King. He grew up in Durham NH, attending Dover High School, graduating in 1953. From there he attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1956 from the Thompson School with a degree in Animal Sciences. While at UNH , he attended a dance where he met Connie, his future wife. After graduating, Walt served in the US Army during the Korean War as a Medic, stationed in Hawaii. Upon his return, Walt began his career at Swift and Company where he worked for 38 years, servicing everything from grocery stores to restaurants, schools, hospitals, and summer camps from the seacoast to the mountains–missing only one day of work for illness.
He and Connie married in June of 1960. They were blessed with nearly 66 years of marriage and 3 children–Greg, Charlie, and Sue. Connie and Walt raised their family in Rochester. Walt was able to continue his pursuit of athletics, playing in adult football, hockey, and softball leagues. Walt also coached some of the hockey teams Greg and Charlie played on throughout the years. Walt and Connie were encouraging and supportive through all of their children’s pursuits–often driving in different directions for hockey games/tournaments, attending all concerts, recitals, dance performances and even motorcycle races with enthusiasm. They were active in multiple booster organizations to support those activities, giving of their time to ensure activities were available for youth enjoyment. Walt’s favorite recreation was golfing and he was a member of Rochester Country Club. He had a standing tee time with his friends Red Allen, Rod Wotton, and Billy Keefe as well as 37 years of an annual golf trip to Cape Cod. We would like to think they are waiting for him now for a game in Heaven.
After retirement, Walt and Connie spent winters in Englewood, Florida, at what they referred to as their “adult playground.” They met many new friends and enjoyed years of activities out of the cold weather. When packing the car, the golf clubs always went in first–they had to fit! They were fortunate to meet many other snowbirds from NH and were able to continue the fun back up north in other seasons.
Walt and Connie were able to travel to see activities of all 6 of their grandchildren as all their kids settled within 90 minutes of Rochester. They loved being available to attend baseball games, lacrosse and field hockey games, flag football games, concerts, recitals, and plays. Once they returned each spring from Florida–each week was filled with trips to fit in everyone’s activities. Travel was also a large part of their retirement. They traveled to 44 of the 50 states and many Caribbean locales and Canadian provinces.
Walter and Connie’s greatest gift was their family. Holidays were always filled with love and laughter with all of their 3 children and spouses, grandchildren, and family dogs all gathered. They have created a legacy of love, with Walt bringing a huge example of love and support for all in his quiet ways. He never wanted anyone to fuss or change plans for him, and he left this world on his terms–after a day of gathered family and after everyone had left the room.
Walter leaves behind his wife, Connie (Dubois) King. His children Greg (and wife Norma) King, Charlie (and wife Marcia) King, Sue (and husband Mike) Matos. And their grandchildren–Andrew King, Apryl (and her husband Mohammed) King, Aubrey King, Jared King, Mikayla Matos and Emily Matos. He also leaves several cousins throughout the area. He was predeceased by his parents, Reginald and Isabelle King, and his brother, Robert King.
Services will be held at Edgerly Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester, NH, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Visitation will be from noon-1 pm, followed by a service from 1-2 pm in the chapel with a burial following the service at Holy Rosary Cemetery on Brock Street.
